Autumn markets in Europe: Prague this week, Vienna and Strasbourg later

Prague has two local market days scheduled this week. Vienna’s design fair follows in November; Strasbourg opens its Christmas market later that month.

The phrase “autumn market” can create very different expectations in three European cities. In late October, Prague has a recurring market on a square. After an October weekend, Vienna looks ahead to a design and craft fair in November. Strasbourg is preparing for a Christmas market that begins only toward the end of November. These destinations do not offer a simultaneous series of markets with matching hours. The event type also shapes what is on offer: fresh produce at a local market, work by designers at a fair, and seasonal stalls at a Christmas market. The calendar makes those distinctions visible.

In Vienna, the Edelstoff design market at Marx Halle took place on 3 and 4 October 2026. Vienna’s tourism site describes fashion, jewellery, products and art by independent makers. That weekend has passed. The next named design fair is Blickfang at the MAK, from Friday 6 through Sunday 8 November. According to the organiser, about 160 selected labels from Austria and elsewhere in Europe will offer furniture, fashion and jewellery. The emphasis is on direct contact with designers and products available on site. The fair has its own character: an indoor programme in a museum, rather than an outdoor October market.

The Blickfang organiser lists different hours for each day. The fair opens on Friday 6 November from 12:00 to 20:00, on Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00 and on Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. The MAK is the stated venue. A Friday afternoon visit therefore has a different window from a weekend visit. The site offers fair tickets and says a ticket also grants access to a MAK exhibition on the same day. The combination of museum and design fair makes Vienna an option for seeing both forms of applied art in one day.

Prague also had a design weekend, but it ended on 25 October. According to the organiser, Dyzajn market Autumn was at Výstaviště in Holešovice on 24 and 25 October, from 10:00 to 18:00 on both days. The programme featured local designers and makers, including clothing, jewellery, ceramics and accessories. That edition belongs to the preceding weekend. A market visit in the final October week in Prague refers to another organiser and another square. Within days, one city can thus have a completed design weekend and a forthcoming food market.

The forthcoming option is Malostranské trhy on Malostranské náměstí. Prague City Tourism lists separate market days on Tuesday 27 and Thursday 29 October 2026, each from 8:00 to 19:00. Its description mentions produce from Czech growers and livestock farmers, alongside food, drinks and crafts. The market is in Malá Strana, where the historic square can also form part of a walk through the district. This is not an extension of Dyzajn market Autumn: the dates, place and goods differ. Even at a recurring market, the stalls present can vary from day to day.

Strasbourg places its market later on the calendar. The official Christmas-market site gives Friday 27 November through Thursday 24 December 2026. Opening-day hours are 14:00 to 21:00; the market is then generally open from 11:00 to 21:00, closing at 18:00 on 24 December. In the final October week, Strasbourg is therefore preparing for winter without an open Christmas market. Together, the three cities form a sequence: two Prague market days in October, a Vienna design fair in early November and Strasbourg’s Christmas market from late November. Official event listings establish what is actually taking place on each date.
