Dolomites in October: walking routes and lift operations

Around Cortina there are autumn paths from under four to about ten kilometres. In October, the timetable of each individual lift also determines what is feasible.

The Dolomites remain a hiking destination in October, but a summer map is then not a travel plan. Around Cortina d’Ampezzo, the local tourist office describes routes through larch forest, along lakes and over higher paths. One loop starts in the valley; another assumes a cable car. Each lift has its own end of season. The promise that everywhere is quiet after the summer cannot be measured for your hiking day. It is better to choose a route that suits the weather, your experience and the facilities that are actually open on that date.

For those who want to start without a lift, Cortina offers a route at Lago di Pianozes. The tourist office describes a loop from the centre through meadows, Campo di Sopra and Campo di Sotto to the lake, and back via path 449 and the former railway line. The published trail-running variant is 10.1 kilometres long with 275 metres of ascent. That is more than a walk just to take a quick photo of the water. The description gives a guide to the course of the route, but says nothing about the condition of the path on 14 October 2026. A recent route map and local reports are therefore worth looking at beforehand.

A shorter autumn option is on the official page of autumn paths: a loop through the nature park of 3.8 kilometres and about 1 hour and 5 minutes, as given in the route description. The same selection lists a tour at Croda da Lago of 5.9 kilometres and about 2 hours and 10 minutes. These are published estimates, not guarantees. On wet ground, or with photo stops, a walk takes longer. On each individual route page, the starting point, difference in height and difficulty are worth reading, because two routes of similar length can feel very different.

Anyone looking higher up must first verify the lift. Dolomiti Supersummer gives a general season from 14 May to 8 November 2026, but that is the validity of the overarching programme. The list by installation showed something different: the 5 Torri chairlift was planned until 11 October, while the Falzarego–Lagazuoi cable car was listed until 18 October. The operational status on the day of the visit may differ from the published season date in bad weather.

The same distinction makes a well-known loop at Faloria difficult if an older route description is followed blindly. For the Dolomieu Trail, Cortina describes a simple descent from Rifugio Faloria, using the cable car as the start. The route page gives 8.5 kilometres and 2 hours and 45 minutes. The current lift list of Dolomiti Supersummer, however, gives an end of season of 20 September 2026 for the Funivia Faloria. This route should therefore not be planned in October with the cable car as an obvious starting point. The tourist office can be asked about an accessible variant, or a valley route can be chosen.

Autumn is also not a safety label. The UNESCO Dolomites Foundation warns that sudden weather and damaged or impassable paths can change the programme. It advises verifying forecasts and path information and, if necessary, cancelling a tour. That applies all the more when a route starts at higher altitude or when the way back depends on a lift. Suitable footwear and clothing should be taken, departure should leave enough daylight, and the official route information should be used instead of a loose photo with a route pin. The two images with this story show a forest at Pomagagnon in 2020 and Lagazuoi in 2023, not current path conditions.

Practical frame: first choose between a valley walk and a high-altitude route. Lago di Pianozes is a described loop from Cortina; the official autumn selection also offers shorter routes. The current lift list gives the date per route. Weather, path reports, bus connections and the opening of mountain huts determine which route is feasible. That way an October tour remains a feasible walk, even when a summer lift is already closed or the mountain weather calls for an alternative.
