Autumn school holidays in Europe: why 26 October means different things

The Netherlands, France, German states, Flanders and one English county follow different school calendars. The relevant region and school matter more than the country name alone.

There is no single European autumn holiday week at the end of October 2026. School holidays are set by country, region and sometimes individual school. Official schedules for the Netherlands, France, Germany, Flanders and one English county show how differently the week beginning Monday 26 October unfolds. Under the Dutch national recommendations, the break is already over on that date, while French pupils are still off school and some German states have their autumn holidays then. The calendar places a travel day in context but says nothing about visitor numbers in a particular museum or city. Many factors beyond school holidays affect those numbers.

In the Netherlands, the government advises an autumn holiday from 10 through 18 October 2026 for the northern region. For the central and southern regions it gives 17 through 25 October. These dates are advisory: schools may differ and publish their own dates in the school guide. Monday 26 October thus falls immediately after the central and southern regions’ break in the national overview, and well after the northern region’s. For a school trip or family plan, the actual school calendar is more precise than the region label. The holiday date also says nothing about an attraction’s opening on the same day.

For metropolitan France, the Ministry of Education lists the same All Saints’ holiday for school zones A, B and C in 2026. Classes end on Saturday 17 October and resume on Monday 2 November. For pupils without Saturday classes, the break begins after Friday’s lessons. Monday 26 October thus falls in the middle of the holiday in these zones. The ministry publishes separate calendars for overseas territories, so the metropolitan dates do not cover all of France. That difference in scope matters on a journey beyond Paris or another mainland destination.

Germany shows why the federal state matters. The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education collects dates set by the Länder themselves. Berlin lists 19 through 31 October 2026; Hamburg lists 19 through 30 October. Baden-Württemberg gives 26 through 30 October and also 31 October. Bavaria’s autumn break begins only on 2 November and runs through 6 November. Berlin and Munich are therefore not on the same autumn-holiday schedule. The national table points to the states, while a school may have additional timetable days of its own.

Belgium likewise has no single holiday schedule for all its communities. Flanders lists Monday 2 through Sunday 8 November as the autumn break for the 2026–27 school year. The Flemish government notes that some holidays in Wallonia and Brussels fall at different times and refers to the French Community calendar. A route through Antwerp and Brussels can therefore encounter two different school contexts. In the United Kingdom, GOV.UK points to local councils for term dates because they vary by place. A date from one English county is thus an example, not a nationwide schedule.

Hertfordshire County Council gives a 2026 half-term from Monday 26 through Friday 30 October. The county also notes that academies and some other school types may set their own term dates. Together with the Dutch, French, German and Flemish schedules, this example shows the appropriate scale for a school calendar: region, state, community or county, supplemented by the individual school’s dates. Transport, hotels and museums then depend on the actual travel dates and the information those providers publish. Overlapping school holidays may affect planning, but do not by themselves establish a fixed visitor count for a destination.
